PREGNANCY
Vaccinations in Pregnancy (Maternal Vaccines)
Getting vaccinated during pregnancy helps to protect both you and your baby. Some vaccines given in pregnancy help your body make protective antibodies that pass through the placenta to your baby, helping protect them from birth and in their first few months of life - when they're most vulnerable and too young to be vaccinated themselves.
FREE vaccines recommended during pregnancy:
- Influenza (Flu)
- Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
- RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
Can I have these vaccinations at the same time?
Yes - it is safe to receive maternal vaccinations at the same time. They can also be given alongside COVID-19 vaccinations if recommended.
What about family members and close contacts?
While not subsidised it is recommended for those in close contact with infants to have had a Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination within the last 10 years and an up to date flu shot.
SHINGLES
What is Shingles?
Shingles is a painful blistering rash caused by the reactivation of the Chickenpox virus (varicella zoster). even fi you had chicken pox years ago, or don't remember it, the virus can stay "sleeping" on your body and reactivate later in life, especially as your immune system changes with age.
What vaccine do we use?
We use Shingrix, which is the recommended shingles vaccine in Australia. Shingrix is given as a course of 2 injections to provide strong, lasting protection.
How many doses do I need?
2 doses are required. The doses are usually administered 2 - 6 months apart.
What is the cost?
Shingrix is FREE under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for eligible people.
- Those aged 65 years and over
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 50 years and over
- eligible people 18 years and over considered at risk due to an underlying condition and/or immunosuppressive treatments
